Reflashing capability appeared quietly on a few cars as long ago as 1990. These electrically erasable, programmable, read-only memory (EEPROM) chips, or "flash PROMs," allow a new service process of "flashing," or "reflashing," the PCM memory through the vehicle diagnostic connector. Since the early 1990s, a growing number of powertrain control modules (PCMs), vehicle control modules (VCMs), body control modules (BCMs) and other on-board computers have been built with PROMs that can be reprogrammed electronically without being removed from the vehicle. ![]() ![]() A subject of increasing interest and debate among independent shop owners is whether or not to invest in the technology necessary to reprogram the latest generation of on-board computers.
